How to Fix the Most Common Cooking Disasters
No matter our level of culinary
expertise, we’ve all experienced
kitchen disasters at one time or
another. However, the good news
is that many of these disasters can
be fixed or saved by keeping your
wits about you and harnessing
some creativity.
Take a look:
1. Your Cake is Stuck in a Pan
If you have time on your side, here’s what Lifehacker says you can do. First, let the cake come to room temperature. Then cover it in plastic wrap and freeze it for at least 6 hours. Then remove the cake from the freezer and run a butter knife around the sides of the pan. Next, use two forks at opposite ends of the cake as “levers” to nudge the cake upwards. Once you do this around the entire cake, invert the pan and tap an edge at a 45 degree angle on a board.
2. Your Rice is Overcooked and Mushy
When you’re handed lemons, make lemonade. And when you end up with mushy rice, make fried rice. Just toss that rice into a saucepan with some eggs, veggies, leftover meat and soy sauce and you’ve made a meal out of a mess.
3. Your Food is Too Spicy
According to Food52, dairy is the best neutralizer for too much spice. So if you need to cool down the spice factor in a dish you’ve made, try stirring in a bit of yogurt or sour cream.
4. Your Veggies Are Overcooked and Have Lost Their Crunch
Make vegetable bouillon cubes to add flavor to soups that you make in the future. Here’s what Good Housekeeping says to do:
Mush up the vegetables and add 1/2 cup of broth, your favorite herbs, and garlic. Then blend like soup and freeze the mixture in ice cube trays to create small vegetable boullion cubes that you can later drop in soups for a boost of flavor.
They also suggest making a mini casserole with the 2 cups of mushy veggies by adding one beaten egg and 1/4 cup breadcrumbs. Then you just top with 1/4 cup shredded cheese and bake for about 15 minutes.
5. Your Meat is Overcooked
If you’ve overcooked your meat, the best thing to do is add a liquid. You can save dry meat with a few cups of chicken or beef broth. Just pour over the meat and let it sit for a bit. You can also cover the meat with a creamy sauce or gravy.
Another idea we found over at Always Order Dessert is to chop up dry meat and use it as a taco or salad topping.
6. Your Gravy is Lumpy
Just pour lumpy gravy into a food processor or blender and puree until it’s smooth. Or you could also pass your gravy through a mesh sieve to removing the flour lumps.
7. Broken Cakes or Cookies
If your baked goods break into pieces, turn that disaster into a parfait or trifle. Take the baked good pieces and layer then with whipped cream and fresh fruit in a large glass bowl or in individual glasses. Chill until you’re ready to serve.
